Long ago the bear was something very powerful and scary, yet an honored and important part of people’s lives. It was believed that humans and the bear had made an agreement in the beginning of time: the bear could pass by people’s land three times in a summer if it needed, but it had no permission to harm cattle or people. This is a charm to remind the bear of its promise.
“Dear bear, darling bear, beautiful furball, honey-paw with rough dark hair. Let’s make a peace between us that lasts forever: When you walk around in your forest kingdom, please avoid the sounds of our children and cattle. Put your two paws on your two ears and find another hill to walk. There’s plenty of land for all of us, for you to run free of people. Remember your ancient vows on the river of Beyond, in front of the knees of our Creator. Please, dear bear, the king of these forests, go far away from the lands where our cattle roam.”

Otsoseni, ainoiseni, mesikämmen kaunoiseni
Metsän kulta, metsän kaunis, metsän eheä eläjä
Otsoseni, lintuseni, mesikynsi metsoseni
Metsän musta mulleroinen, kaunis karvapalleroinen
Otsoseni kultaseni, mesikämmen kääröseni,
Metsän musta mummukoinen, karvarössi röyhetyinen
